Underground comic artist Mike Diana was the first ever artist to receive a criminal conviction for obscenity for his artwork in the United States of America. Now, DIVUS London brings a comprehensive solo exhibition of cartoons, drawings and paintings together for the first time at the Enclave Gallery in Deptford south London.

What do we think about while fucking? Both the porn industry and the morally conservative lobby want us to believe that sex holds such an important position in our lives that we allow ourselves to succumb completely to our animal instincts. But is that really so? Does sex hold such a place in our lives that we think of nothing but our gratification? Or do we not frequently busy our thoughts with other matters while having sex? Shopping lists, or philosophical questions, for example. Or with the age-old question of what is art!

Barker's remarkably candid photographs show the founders of punk in their bedrooms and kitchens, and at forgotten private parties where they were experimenting with the extremes of dress and style that later became synonymous with punk – but at this time was still restricted to the creative use of their grandmothers’ wardrobes. Barker’s unassuming lens perfectly captures the spirit of the moment, before the twin forces of media and commerce inevitably sunk their claws into the heart of punk’s style and latent politics.
